Community and cheer

Edna

The Garth House community recently came together to celebrate resident Pam’s 88th birthday. Pam is an avid creative with a passion for arts and crafts, knitting, crocheting, card-making, and creating jewellery. She loves to spend time with her loved ones and is known for her love of singing and parties, so the Garth House team organised a fitting party, with family, music, games and delicious treats! Everyone had a wonderful day, especially Pam, who shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed my party! Thank you to everyone who joined me to celebrate.”

Sundridge Court recently celebrated beloved resident Edna’s 100th birthday. Born in 1925 in Beckenham, Edna grew up as one of eight siblings. She left school at 14 to work at a dry cleaners before helping in her parents’ greengrocer’s shop during the war years. She married her dear husband, Ron, in 1944 and raised twins, Marilyn and Michael. Family has always been at the heart of Edna’s life and her family has since grown to include two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Edna has been a member of the Sundridge Court community for the past four years. She is well known for her warm smile and enthusiasm for group activities, especially enjoying regular exercise sessions and always bringing positivity to those around her. When asked about the secret to a long life, Edna simply shared:

Dancing through the years

The team and residents at Southlands Place recently celebrated the wonderful Joan’s 99th birthday. Born in Bexhill-on-Sea in 1926, Joan (affectionately known as “Smiler”) has spent her entire life in Bexhill. A passionate dancer, Joan often reminisces about her time performing on stage. She fondly recalls her happy marriage to her beloved husband and takes great pride in her son and daughter. Joan loves sharing stories of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she especially enjoys when her family joins her for events at the home, such as craft afternoons and themed days.

Being happy and enjoying every moment!

Phyllis

Coppice Lea was proud to celebrate a truly special milestone as resident Phyllis marked her 100th birthday.

Joan, a cherished resident of Belmont Castle, recently celebrated her 102nd birthday. Joining the home in February 2024, she’s since brought joy to the community with her vibrant energy and sense of humour. Joan enjoyed a successful career as a solicitor and is an avid football fan, having supported Maidenhead United for many years. In 1951, she married her husband Ronald and the two went on to explore the world together on many cruises. Her favourite meal is a traditional English breakfast, and when asked about her secret to a long life, Joan attributes it to a small drink every night - whether it’s a Whisky Mac, a glass of Merlot, or some dry sherry! A life of adventure

Born in Surrey in 1925, Phyllis developed a passion for sports and music from a young age. At 17, she joined the Land Army during World War II, playing an essential role in supporting the nation’s farming efforts. In 1950, Phyllis met her beloved husband Dennis, and together they raised three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Their home was always lively, with friends and family joining them for parties. Both animal lovers, the family also included many pets, including cats, dogs, and chickens.

Loving with care

DEMENTIA STRATEGY

At Aria Care, we understand how important it is for couples to stay together in their later years. That’s why many of our homes offer specialist support, allowing couples to continue their journey side by side, even if their care needs differ. With personalised care plans and a warm, home from home environment, they enjoy independence, companionship, and lasting security.

At Aria Care, we believe that every individual living with dementia deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. That’s why we are proud to introduce our new dementia strategy, Living with Heart, Loving with Care – a holistic approach designed to enhance the lives of those affected by dementia while providing effective and safe person-centred care. With nearly a million people in the UK living with dementia, a number expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040, we’re committed to helping residents maintain their independence with purpose and joy. Our strategy supports the dementia journey - from diagnosis and family support to meaningful activities, homely environments, and compassionate end-of-life care. We empower our teams with specialised dementia training and embrace innovative technology to enrich residents' daily lives.

Rob and Irene’s Story

“There’s a whole new chapter waiting here. We are so happy, we feel like part of the family, and most importantly – we have peace of mind knowing we’ll always be together.”

After 70 years of marriage, Rob and Irene continue to share their lifelong bond at Coxhill Manor, where they’ve found a true home. The decision to move into care came when Rob’s health declined, and they wanted to ease the burden on their daughter. Although they were initially anxious about the move, their worries quickly faded as they were welcomed by a kind team, a warm community, and a beautiful room full of their treasured belongings. Now, they enjoy a new kind of independence, free from household responsibilities. They spend their days walking in the

garden, enjoying activities like Bingo, Countdown, and Sunday church services, and even sing together in the choir. For couples considering care, Rob and Irene have one heartfelt message:

We encourage residents to continue their hobbies, whether it’s making tea, engaging in arts and crafts, or attending community groups. Memory stimulation is key, with reminiscence activities that encourage meaningful conversations and connections. At Aria Care, we never lose sight

of the person behind dementia. While moving into a care home is a big change, who our residents are remains the same. Dementia may shape their journey, but it does not define them. We honour their story, identity, and choices - helping them live life to the fullest, with heart and care.

World book day

Characters come to life

Residents of Southborough were delighted by a special visit from the children of Sutherland Day Nursery. The residents, lovingly known as “GranFriends,” were thrilled to welcome the little ones, who brought an abundance of energy and joy. The children, dressed as various characters, shared their favourite stories with the residents, sparking imaginations and creating a magical atmosphere. The highlight of the visit was the nursery’s principal making a grand entrance as Mary Poppins, inspiring the children to embrace their roles and immerse themselves in the stories.

World Book Day celebrates the magic of reading and the many benefits it brings to book lovers of all ages. For older adults, it offers mental stimulation, while children develop language skills and creativity. Brook House invited children from Towcester Primary School to read their favourite stories to residents. Some of the residents’ grandchildren also joined in the fun with a wholesome performance of The Three Little Pigs. Everyone shared what they love about reading – nine-year-old George described it as an adventure, while resident Patricia said she enjoys learning new things through books. It was a wonderful occasion that sparked imaginations and connected generations through a shared love of storytelling.

Adventures with Pooh

Garth House was joined by author Emma Simpson and children from Dorking Nursery School to celebrate World Book Day. Emma, a talented storyteller, offered a unique insight into literature from the perspective of the writer. The residents and children gathered around as she read her favourite book from her childhood, Winnie-the-Pooh. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful time together, reading, singing, and getting creative by making their own bookmarks to take home for their books. Resident Christopher shared, “It was brilliant! I had the most amazing time with the children, and it was great to meet Emma!” Stories and smiles For World Book Day, Scoonie House warmly welcomed the children of Buckhaven Nursery, who got into the spirit by dressing as their favourite fictional characters, from Disney princesses to Marvel superheroes.

They spent time chatting with residents about their favourite books, reading to one another, and singing songs together. The residents were absolutely delighted to see the children, with resident Alison commenting, “This just melts my heart!”

Moments of Joy

Wee Ones and Wise Ones

Forth Bay recently introduced ‘Wee Ones and Wise Ones,’ bringing together two generations for fun-filled sessions of songs, stories, and cuddles! The idea came from a simple and lovely thought - bringing little ones and residents together for special moments. The curious little ones were in their element, exploring a new place, meeting friendly faces, and giggling away as residents entertained them with smiles and games. Residents were overjoyed to spend time with the little bundles of joy, enjoying a cuddle and reminiscing about the days when they were young parents themselves.

At Ferfoot, the team and residents had a special visit from Owl Adventures. Lydia from Owl Adventures brought along a variety of birds, including an Indian scops owl, a barn owl, a Eurasian eagle-owl, and a Harris hawk. Residents had the chance to interact with the owls, petting them and watching as some of the birds flew. The visit sparked a lot of curiosity, with residents asking questions and learning all about the birds. Home Manager Roxana shared, “It was amazing to witness the beautiful birds flying around, and the residents’ reactions were truly heartwarming.” Owl adventures

Holi festival The team and residents at Dormy House recently celebrated the Hindu festival of Holi. Celebrated at the end of winter, on the last full moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar month, Holi marks the arrival of spring. The home burst into a sea of colour as everyone gleefully threw handfuls of bright powders at one another and released an array of colourful balloons to symbolise new beginnings. Adding to the festivities, the talented tap dancer Katie, from the Tap About Town show, put on a fantastic performance for everyone.

Residents and team members at Oaken Holt recently ventured down the rabbit hole with their very own Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Nikki and Erin from the wellbeing team went the extra mile to transform the lounge into a whimsical wonderland. Residents enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon with fantastic costumes and a scrumptious afternoon tea in the beautifully decorated space. Everyone took part in a ‘best hat’ competition, getting creative with some weird and wonderful designs. Resident Grahame was crowned the winner for his fun and imaginative creation! Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Residents with green thumbs

At Bourne House, residents have been reconnecting with their love for gardening. With guidance from the lifestyle coordinator and care team, they planted tulips, daffodils, and snowdrop bulbs, adapting from outdoor to indoor planting as the seasons changed. The project sparked cherished memories, with residents sharing stories of their own gardens and allotments. John, the home’s dedicated ‘garden guardian,’ regularly checked on the bulbs, ensuring their growth. After tending to their plants, residents enjoyed tea, coffee, and biscuits, reflecting on their horticultural achievements and the joy of watching their flowers bloom.

Musical trip down memory lane Priory Court was recently visited by Richard as part of his ‘Memories Are Made of Music’ project, using music to support those living with dementia. He played a nostalgic mix of 50s and 60s rock’n’roll classics that had residents singing, dancing, and reminiscing, including Edward, who shared a dance with Lifestyle

Lead Fiona to Bring Me Sunshine. The song brought back a flood of memories and emotions for him. This wonderful project is a reminder of how music can be a powerful tool in dementia care. As Richard shared, “It’s not just about the music itself, it’s about the memories it brings back and the conversations it sparks.”
